Grand Opening of Anglophone West School District’s Newcomer Support Centre

February, 2017

On November 22, 2016 Anglophone West School District (ASD-W) welcomed the community to the Grand Opening of its Newcomer Support Centre (NSC), which is the first point of contact for
newcomers to Canada who wish to register their children for school in the Greater Fredericton Area. The NSC assists families in their transition to the New Brunswick school system, provides support for learners of English as an Additional Language (EAL), and promotes cultural diversity initiatives across ASD-W’s 69 schools. Since September, the Newcomer Support Centre has registered 315 students from over 33 countries. More than 600 students are currently learning English as an Additional Language in ASD-W and participate in our school’s activities that celebrate the many forms of diversity in our schools and communities.
The centre is located in downtown Fredericton at 575 George Street in George Street Middle School and is staffed by a team of teachers who coordinate the centre’s many initiatives.
