New Learning Specialist for EAL and Newcomer Children and Youth at New Brunswick’s Department of Education and Early Childhood Development

March, 2017

Kathy Whynot is the new Learning Specialist for English as an Additional Language and
Newcomer Children and Youth at the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (EECD). She defines herself first and foremost as a teacher, with almost twenty years of experience working with new Canadians. She has taught:

  • LINC classes at the Multicultural Association of Fredericton
  • teenagers at the summer English Language Program at UNB
  • adults who require English to return to the workforce at a private school in Toronto

She has spent countless hours, in several provinces, providing in home tutoring to individuals and families needing language support as they settled into their new country.

Kathy has had many other experiences over the past twenty years including teaching Montessori Kindergarten in Beijing, China, and serving as the Executive Director of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for New Brunswick. Her most recent experiences prior to moving to EECD include teaching middle school Language Arts and Health, and English Language Learners at a large high school here in Fredericton. Her varied background and experiences provide her with rich perspective, and several lenses through which to understand our new Canadians.  This provides Kathy with immense passion for this work, in all its contexts.  When not in meetings or writing curriculum, she’s a busy parent to two young daughters, Eleanor and Lillian, and an avid traveller and yogi.
